What is Idolatry?

Christian Nationalism Part 1

The Bible warns against idolatry. But what is it exactly? How can I avoid it if I don’t know what it is? Colossians 3:5-6 offers an edict that fearful people might be tempted to use as justification for hatred and persecution. It says, "Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire and covetousness, which is idolatry."

Its purpose, though, is not that we should judge others. Instead, it encourages us to examine ourselves and let go of harmful behaviors and desires that can negatively impact our lives and the lives of those around us. From a secular, progressive perspective, this passage represents a call to self-improvement and ethical living. It urges us to move away from actions driven by greed, lust, and malice, and instead focus on cultivating positive qualities like empathy, integrity, and respect for others. By doing so, we can create a more just and compassionate society, free from the destructive influences of selfishness and harmful desires.

Join us this Sunday as we explore the concept of idolatry and its impact on our lives. We'll discuss what idolatry really means, how to recognize it in our daily routines, and why it's important to stay mindful of our priorities.
